To Support COVID-19 Workforce Economic Recovery and Job Creation Plan in Alberta
October 20, 2022, Edmonton—EHRC (Electricity Human Resources Canada), in partnership with the Government of Alberta, is delivering new resources to help grow Alberta’s electricity workforce with a project titled PowerShift. This project will support workers who have opted to permanently shift from Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector due to COVID-19 pandemic impacts and transition to the province’s growing electricity industry. The electricity sector offers many rewarding career opportunities, with an increasing focus on technology innovation and renewable energy.
Alberta’s Emerging Economy: A blueprint for job creation through 2030 study reported that the province has the potential to unlock untapped job market and economic potential through the creation of 31,300 new jobs in renewable energy over the next decade. A key finding from EHRC’s Labour Market Intelligence for Alberta’s Energy Sector – Workforce Transitions report identifies the need for electrical utilities and supporting industries to prepare for a transitioning workforce through cross-training and upskilling. This presents an opportunity for electricity employers to consider workers who have opted to transition from other industries – creating jobs and getting Albertans back to work will benefit from an approach that identifies and connects skills and training.
The PowerShift project, funded by the Government of Alberta’s Labour Market Partnerships program, is a collaborative effort led by EHRC and supported by tourism human resources stakeholders.
PowerShift is a one-stop information source offering valuable career transition resources. Serving as a useful reference to plan career paths into the electricity sector, the following resources map the transferable competencies to functional areas in Alberta’s electricity sector:
– Jobseekers can now access information to better understand the electricity sector and self-assessment tools to recognize how their current skills and experience can be transferred to in-demand positions in the electricity industry, as well as a guide to attain additional/required skills.
– Career development professionals are guided by resources that help match their clients to rewarding electricity sector opportunities.
– Electricity employers can deploy new resources that help recognize competencies instead of job titles to read resumes differently – to become better equipped with a new appreciation for candidates’ value and potential.
“Electricity employers are looking beyond traditional recruiting pools to fill critical industry labour shortages by attracting career-seekers who are more mobile across jobs and sectors and share common and in-demand skills – including client relations, sales and business development, and marketing-communications expertise,” advised Michelle Branigan, CEO, EHRC. “We are facilitating these opportunities to continue to strengthen Alberta’s economy.”
This initiative is funded by the Government of Alberta’s Labour Market Partnerships (LMP), part of the broader Workforce Partnerships Program.
EHRC has completed a series of successful collaboration projects with the Government of Alberta, including provincial labour market research, succession planning to build sector resilience, toolkit learning resources to increase inclusiveness and diversity, and best practices sharing for best results.
