Building the Workforce of Tomorrow

In 2008, Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC) conducted a study on succession planning in the electricity and renewable energy sector. The purpose of the study was to identify best practices being used in Canada and around the world.

The study resulted in the final report Succession Planning Best Practices and Tools for the Canadian Electricity and Renewable Energy Sector. The report not only detailed the best practices for succession planning, but also identified the difficulties often faced when putting these practices into action.

Succession planning is part of a larger management practice called workforce planning. It helps to ensure there will always be enough highly-qualified successors to fill critical positions and become future leaders.

Two Types of Planning, Two Types of Tools

With these separate but similar planning requirements, EHRC developed two sets of tools that allow organizations to conduct both succession and workforce planning depending on their particular needs.

EHRC designed the online Coaching & Mentoring Toolkit to help organizations and employees develop their coaching skills — an important first-step in the succession planning process.

The toolkit explains how you can build your support network and receive ongoing guidance from more experienced employees. It’s also a great way to encourage knowledge transfer and skill development throughout the organization.
